Short-duration grazing: Experiences from the Edwards Plateau region in Texas

چکیده

Y the turn of the century, the Edwards Plateau region of Texas had developed into a major livestock area (27). Continuous, heavy grazing by domestic livestock and the prevention of natural fires since that time have significantly changed the vegetative complex (15, 16). Long-term, excessive removal of vegetation on the plateau by grazing animals reduced the protective herbaceous cover, broke down soil aggregates, reduced infiltration rates, increased erosion, and accelerated the ingress of undesireable brush. Today, the range resource manager is faced with deteriorated rangeland, poisonous plants, predators, mimal health problems, brush infestation, variable precipitation patterns, escalating operating costs, an unstable economy, and erratic markets . Ranchers must respond effectively to these biological, physical, and economic factors if they are to make a profit from year to year.

Diet Selection by Cattle under High- Intensity Low-Frequency, Short Duration, and Merrill Grazing Systems

A study was conducted to evaluate standing crop of forage and cattle diets for a ‘I-pasture high-intensity low-frequency (HILF) grazing system, and a ‘I-pasture short-duration grazing (SDG) system on the same area. A epasture, 3-herd (Merrill) deferred rotation grazing system was sampled as a standard for comparison. Standing crop of forage was highest for the HILF grazing system compared to th...

Infiltration and interrill erosion responses to selected live- stock grazing strategies, Edwards Plateau, Texas

Understanding tbe temporal response of infiltration rate and interrill erosion to selected livestock grazing strategies is necessary for the continued soil and water conservation of rangeland. Inflltration rate and btterrill erosion were sampled bimontbly from 1978-1984 on pastures grazed continuously (MCG) and moderately stocked (8.1 be AU-r); continuously (I-ICC) and heavily stocked (4.6 ha A...

Hydrologic Characteristics of Vegetation Types as Affected by Livestock Grazing Systems, Edwards Plateau, Texas

Infiltration rate and sediment production were assessed in oak, bunchgrass and sodgrass vegetation types in moderate continuous (MCG), heavy continuous (HCG), and intensive rotation (shortduration, SDG) grazing systems and in a livestock exclosure (LEX). Infiltration rate was related to the total organic cover and bulk density characteristics of the site (RJ = 36). The amount of cover was more ...

Infectious disease survey of Rio Grande wild turkeys in the Edwards Plateau of Texas.

State wildlife agencies have translocated thousands of wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) since the 1930s to reestablish this species. Because of threats to the domestic poultry industry and wild birds, screening for selected infectious agents has become routine since the early 1980s. One of the principal sources for Rio Grande wild turkeys (M. gallopavo intermedia) for translocation purposes w...
